Prepare, respond, recover
Disaster Resilience
Teams build technology that helps communities prepare for, respond to and recover from bushfires, floods, cyclones and heatwaves.
Disaster Resilience is one of 12 competition categories in TechFest Australia, a national technology competition and festival for Australian school students and young innovators. It is open to Junior (Years 3–6), Secondary (Years 7–12), Tertiary (University or TAFE) and Open (Ages 18–30) entries.
The 2027 challenge
Give a community earlier warning: build a system that detects the first signs of a bushfire or flood, such as smoke, heat or rising water, and gets a clear message to the people who need it.
Example projects
- Smoke and heat sensor network for the edge of a town
- Water level gauge at a creek crossing that warns drivers before they enter
- Offline map app that shows evacuation routes and meeting points
